A 1978 graduate of Bainbridge High School, Riles was an outstanding shortstop for the Bearcats from 1976–1978. During his senior season, he earned All-Region honors and posted an impressive .616 batting average. His success on the field earned him a scholarship to Middle Georgia College, where he helped lead the team to a National Championship and a JUCO World Series title in 1980.
In 1981, Riles was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He made an immediate impact at the professional level, finishing as the runner-up for American League Rookie of the Year in 1985. In 1988, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants and was part of the team during the historic 1989 World Series, which was interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake.
While with the Giants, Riles achieved a remarkable milestone by hitting the 10,000th home run in franchise history in 1988—an accomplishment that earned his bat a place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Above all his achievements, Ernest Riles remains a proud alumnus of Bainbridge High School and a lasting part of the Bainbridge Bearcats baseball tradition.
